Have you ever wondered why frankincense is called the King of Oils?
It is because of where it is from and what it represents.
Frankincense comes from the Boswellia tree.
A tree that grows in:
- dry land
- rocky mountains
- places where almost nothing else survives
This is what we call… the wilderness.
While other plants struggle, this tree stands.
And when it is cut,
it releases a resin, a fragrance that has been treasured for thousands of years.
It is a fragrance that is:
Not from comfort.
Not from abundance.
But from wilderness and from a wound.
This is intentional.
This is creation pointing towards a truth:
That the greatest of life,
Comes through overcoming the greatest adversity.
The wilderness in the Bible
1. A place of testing
The wilderness reveals what is inside us.
Frankincense is often used to bring clarity and grounding, helping us face what is true.
2. A place of dependence
In the wilderness, we learn we cannot rely on ourselves, but solely on God.
Frankincense gently reminds us to slow down, breathe, and return to stillness.
3. A place of preparation
Before we walk into our purpose, we are often led through a wilderness.
Frankincense supports quiet moments where growth happens unseen.
4. A place of spiritual battle
The wilderness is where identity is tested.
Frankincense is often used in prayer and reflection, anchoring the heart.
5. A place of intimacy with God
In the wilderness, distractions are removed.
Frankincense has been used in worship or meditation for centuries, drawing hearts upward.
6. A place of transformation
The wilderness is not the end, It is the process.
Frankincense extracted from wound to fragrance, is a process of that transformation.
That is why it is the King of Oils
Not because it is the strongest,
but because of what it carries.
It is an oil that meets us in the wilderness,
not to fix everything instantly,
but to walk with us through it.
It brings us back to ourselves, to peace and to what truly matters in a very gentle way.
In the same way, frankincense was offered to Jesus Christ, not because the oil is great, but because He is worthy.
Wow!
Frankincense is called the King of Oils,
and Jesus is the King of kings — our only Saviour.
Do you see the beauty of God’s creation?
Reflection:
Healing is not just about removing symptoms.
Often, healing happens in the wilderness,
- when things are chaotic or quiet
- when things are uncertain
- when we have to let go
No matter in which season we are in,
God has already prepared what we need.
“The Lord will provide.”
— Genesis 22:14
